Says Keshi: World Cup place is all that matters

Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi has stressed his sole priority is securing a positive result in their World Cup play-off with Ethiopia, and not on leaving a legacy with the national team.

The former Anderlecht defender led the Super Eagles to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 1994 before achieving the same feat as coach 19 years later as Nigeria beat Burkina Faso in the 2013 final in South Africa.

Egypt's Mahmoud El-Gohary is the only other player to have achieved the same feat, yet Keshi insists he is more concerned with sealing Nigeria's place in the World Cup finals for the fifth time rather than focus on his previous triumphs with the team.

I think nothing about a legacy, let me have a very good result tomorrow and that’s it, he told reporters outside the team's training ground in Addis Ababa.

We will attack when it’s necessary and when it’s necessary to defend, we will defend. You just have to study the game and make the right decisions.

Much has been made of the effects of the altitude at the Addis Ababa Stadium, but Keshi claims he is more concerned about the state of the pitch ahead of the crucial clash.

The pitch is very hard, something needs to be done, the 51-year-old said. A little bit of watering the field will be very nice to ensure a very good game and for the players on both sides not to be injured. We need to see nice football.

Keshi also praised the work of Ethiopia boss Sewnet Bishaw, and stressed his side would not be affected by the vociferous home support on Sunday.

Whatever the Ethiopian fans are doing is not new, we’ll just concentrate on our game and come out and play, he added.

I think it’s right for the fans to support their team. If you come to Nigeria it is the same thing, and all over the world teams have their fans supporting them.

Ethiopia are a very good team, I think they have a very good coach, a seasoned coach. He not only loves the game, he's a very good man.
