Napoli coach Rafael Benitez
was reluctant to accept any praise for his squad rotation after leading
his new club to the summit of Serie A with 2-0 win over Genoa on Saturday.
A first-half Goran Pandev brace proved enough to earn three points at the Luigi Ferraris, as the Partenopei overtook Roma at the top of the table.
Benitez was praised for his brave decision to leave some star names
out of his starting line-up, but the former Liverpool boss felt he was
merely being prudent.
I am consistent rather than courageous, the Champions League winner told Sky Sport Italia.
I have experience and have been in Europe many times, so I know
squad rotation is necessary to make everyone in the side stronger. The
team won with character.
Despite keeping a clean sheet, and having conceded just four goals in
six matches, Benitez believes there are still some cracks in Napoli's
defence that need repairing.
I didn't like some things, as we allowed too many crosses into the
box, but it's not easy in these conditions, Benitez said. But I
thought the game was closer to 3-0 than 2-1 all the way through.
Benitez added that Napoli's supporter base was putting high
expectations on the squad after a strong transfer window for the club,
but did concede that he feels that there is still a lot more to come
from his side.
It is tougher for the fans, as they see the team winning almost
every game and think we can win everything. We know that's not the
case, he said.
