Jose Manuel de la Torre has paid the price for Mexico's dismal run of form after being sacked as head coach on Saturday.
El Tri were beaten 2-1 at home by Honduras on Friday, a defeat which saw them slip to fourth in the latest Concacaf World Cup qualification stage and leave their hopes of reaching the World Cup hanging in the balance.
The Mexican Football Federation confirmed the news via a short statement on their official website, stating that assistant coach Luis Fernando Tena will take charge of the side on an interim basis.
De la Torre, who took the Mexico post in 2011, has overseen a dismal run of results in 2013, which was compounded by Friday's stunning defeat at the Azteca.
Mexico were knocked out of the group stages at the Confederations Cup in Brazil, before being beaten twice by Panama at the Gold Cup - including a dismal defeat in the semi-final.
Having won just once in seven games in the fourth qualifying round of the Concacaf section, Mexico are tentatively placed heading into next week's crunch clash with USA.
They will face a play-off clash with New Zealand should they fail to claw their way back into the three automatic qualification spots.
